Cross Tab - Aggregate Values Using Count on Text Fields

When using the Cross Tab tool, the Count option under Method for Aggregating Values only appears when the field selected for Values for New Columns is a numeric field. I can add a numeric RecordID before the Cross Tab and then count on that, but why can't the Cross Tab count non-numeric fields? The Summarize tool can.

i have to create a number field to be sum in cross tab.

Agreed !  I'm actually surprised that this simple (yet valuable) enhancement has not gotten more traction in the past three years.  I'm certainly adding my voice to this one - counting text values in the crosstab is definitely a must !  With and without nulls, please.
