Developer Community 1-year Anniversary
On November 28th we celebrated the Alteryx Developer Community's birthday! In the announcement blog @NeilR shares a few of his favorite year-1 highlights, we introduce a new badge for our founding members, and we reveal the inaugural Dev Space top contributors: Happy Birthday Dev Space!
New Getting Started on Community Articles
We've published a handful of new resources to help you make the most of your experience here.
There is A LOT of stuff on Community. We try hard to organize it intuitively, but most of the time you'll probably end up searching for what you need. Learn how to make the most of basic and advanced search functionality.
Some of the most popular areas of the Community are the discussion forums and the knowledge base. These discussion styles have two methods for acknowledging helpful or awesome content; Solutions and Stars.
You can find additional Community Resources in the Getting Started area here: Alteryx Community Getting Started Resources
Never. Stop. Learning.

Weekly Challenge
Happy Anniversary, Developer Community! To celebrate, dive into the world of the Alteryx SDKs with Challenge #143! Use the provided macro to replicate the macro's UI with the HTML GUI SDK. Choose a difficulty level, either Basic or Advanced, to stretch your skills with extending the Alteryx platform.
There are three certainties in an Alteryx user's life: workflows, death and taxes. In Challenge #142, assign a tax rate to each salary. Solve the challenge as is, or up the ante: don't use a Join, Crosstab, Transpose, Multi-Field Formula or Multi-Row Formula tool to find the solution.
Challenge #140 was special not only because each Challenger got to create their own input data, but also because we proved the Birthday Paradox on Joe Miller's own birthday! How many people in a group (or in a single Weekly Challenge thread) do you need before there is a 75% chance that two people share the same birthday? A 90% chance?
Aside from completing a Weekly Challenge, there's nothing more thrilling than World Series baseball! In Challenge #138, analyze data on previous World Series match-ups to determine each team's number of World Series appearances, list the years in which each team won the World Series, and calculate each team's winning percentage based on their World Series appearances.
Are there other Alteryx skills you’d like to put into practice? No problem. We’ve got you covered. You can browse all of the available challenges by difficulty and subject, right here.

Advanced Certification & Community
The Community is chock full of resources to help you achieve your Alteryx Certification dreams!
This month we'll focus on how to leverage the Community to pass the Alteryx Designer Advanced exam. See last months highlights blog for Core Exam tips.
The Alteryx Designer Advanced certification exam builds on concepts included in the Core exam and also requires users to understand a wider breadth of tool functionality and apply their knowledge to more complex applications.
On Demand Training
While we host live training sessions on the Community every week, you also have the ability to playback previously recorded sessions. If your studying for the Advanced Exam we recommend watching the following on-demand trainings:
- Tips and Tricks - Underrated Tools
- Parsing with Regular Expressions
- Introduction to Reporting
- Reporting for Intermediate Users
- Spatial Analytics for Intermediate Users
- Build your first Macro
- Build you first Batch Macro
- Build your first iterative Macro
- Analytics App Development for Intermediate Users
- Alteryx Gallery and Best Practices
- Advanced Exam Prep Session
On the Road to Advanced with Weekly Challenges
Getting involved in the Weekly Challenges is a great way to flex your Alteryx muscle and prepare for the practical application questions. Practical application questions require you to connect to a provided data set in Alteryx Designer and build a workflow to arrive at the correct answer. While there are only four of these types of questions this time around, each is worth a whopping 10 points!
We recommend completing the following challenges to take your superhero status to the next level:
- Let's Get Crafty (apps)
- Draw 1,000 Apples in Under 60 Seconds (macros)
- Where to Host an Event (spatial)
- Reduce the Manual Inputs (advanced prep)
- Ranking Data (advanced prep)
- Map Hurricane Harvey (spatial)
Improve your skills with Interactive Lessons
For the Advanced exam, you can direct your energy towards completing the Spatial Analytics, Writing Expressions, and the Creating Analytic Apps courses.
Exam Preparation Guide
The exam outline (see pages five and six) provides a summary of what tools and categories are included on the exam:
- Advanced Prep
- Advanced Join & Parse
- Spatial Analytics
- Reporting
- Macros/Apps
- Alteryx Gallery
.
On the next page, you'll find a self assessment grid which you can use to evaluate your familiarity with each tool as well as your ability to differentiate the functionality of similar tools. This resource should help you decide which areas to focus on before attempting the exam.
Remember that the exam isn't just a test, it's also part of the learning journey. If you don't pass on your first attempt, identify areas of difficulty and study up before taking the exam again.
Visit the Alteryx Certification page to learn more about all of our Product Certification offerings.
