With new technologies that allow us to gather, store, and analyze data in unprecedented ways, it has become crucial to understand the numbers that impact our lives – not just in the office, but in our personal lives as well. A basic understanding of statistical analytics can help us interpret the daily information we are exposed to, identify the numbers that have broad social implications, and define the choices we make in life.

Charles WheelanThat's why we've added Charles Wheelan as the closing keynote speaker to our Inspire 2014 conference, June 16-18 at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. Charles is an engaging story teller who appeals to a broad audience by boiling statistics down to its core values and concepts.

Charles is a regular contributor to NPR and writes Yahoo!'s popular Naked Economics column. He also teaches public policy at the University of Chicago, is senior lecturer and policy fellow at Dartmouth College, and was a gubernatorial speechwriter and Midwest correspondent for The Economist.

As Charles tells MPR in this audio interview, and in this audio excerpt from his most recent book, Naked Statistics: Stripping the Dread from the Data, many people stop taking an interest in statistics because they don't see its application in their everyday lives. Yet, these same people will often discuss the validity of statistical metrics such as quarterback ratings or presidential approval ratings, and read articles featuring public opinion poll results.

According to the book review in The New York Times, Naked Statistics succeeds in showing why statistical analysis is relevant in everyday life. Charles' frequent references to current trends "makes statistics interesting and fun" according to The Economist, and "strips [statistics] of its complexity to expose the sexy stuff underneath."

We are honored to have him bring his fast-paced and witty style to the closing keynote at Inspire 2014. Charles will show us all how statistics and data aren't just essential tools for understanding the world—they can actually be fun if used in the right way. Yes, making statistics fun for non-statisticians is a tall order, but Charles will help us strip away the dread and communicate key statistics concepts to others.
