How to create an alert and stop downstream workflows from running

I am a series of workflows that are dependent on each other . If one of the upstream workflow fails is there a way that I can flag or create an alert in the downstream not to run . Also can I create a way that the downstream workflows can run automatically on the server with out me having to manually running again.  I was told maybe to create Batch Macros or test in Workflow dependencies but I am not sure about the stopping the other runs and restarting automatically
