AlteryxEngineCmd.exe from a Windows Server

Good morning,

We currently have the Alteryx Designer + Scheduler Licenses in order to run overnight Alteryx jobs from our local machines using the cmd AlteryxEngineCmd.exe feature.

However, we would like to do exact the same but running these jobs from a Windows Server using the Windows Task Scheduler tool.

Can anyone confirm whether we could simply install the Alteryx Designer + Scheduler Licenses in the stated Windows Server or we would need an extra License in order to do that?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi @robertorteu,

the Desktop Automation add-on (aka Scheduler, is not supported on a Windows Server OS). You'll need to look into Alteryx Server, which includes scheduling capabilities.

Hope this helps,

Giuseppe

Hi Giuseppe,

First of all, thank you so much for coming back to me so fast, it is really appreciated.

Re the Alteryx Server License, does it offer the capacity to run jobs using the AlteryxEngineCmd.exe command or we would just be able to use the Alteryx Scheduler interface in that case?

Many thanks in advance.

Kind regards;

Rob.

Hi Rob @robertorteu,

No problem at all!

There's a number of ways in which you can schedule jobs using the Alteryx Server (see here https://help.alteryx.com/2018.2/ScheduleNewJob.htm), including using the AlteryxEngineCmd.exe via command line.

The best configuration depends on your actual use case, of course, but in general, if you preferred to use command line to schedule jobs on Alteryx Server, you'd miss out on on a lot of built in features (like queue management, workflow prioritization, ...).

Also, once you've got Server is also worth looking at capabilities like sharing and collaboration, apps, ... You can find out more here: https://www.alteryx.com/products/alteryx-platform/alteryx-server

Hope this helps, but please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Best,

Giuseppe

Best,

Giuseppe
