I submitted this challenge over 5 years ago. Back then, I had many difficulties parsing extra characters and creating many columns.
This is a preview of my solution in 2017
This time I still struggled with greediness of the .*--(any character zero or more times) because it was eating up one of the day digits; I had to take a refresher video on the difference of the greedy .* and non-greedy .*? to fix this issue. After that, it was smooth sailing.
Here is the updated solution with less columns generated for today.
