The East Hartford Gazette published my letter to the editor under the title "'Alteryx for Good' can help unleash the power of stats", this week.
Whether Alteryx for Good or not, Alteryx or the user groups should encourage users to sponsor pro bono assistance to worthy recipient organizations.
TO THE EDITOR:
I always look forward to reading and paying attention to your ongoing series of letters from Susan Kniep, even when the there's an apparent typo in the heading.
However , I am beginning to hope she switches from a prosecutorial stance to a more analytic and problem solving approach and suggests specific fixes to various Connecticut and East Hartford issues.
Susan does commend Comptroller Lembo for beginning the state's transparency websites. They are a start but have a ways to go to progress from translucency to true transparency. She did get some spreadsheet data for the city of Hartford but would do well to have data capable of analysis and problem solving for the entire stste.
For effective statistical snalysis, basic Checkbook data needs to be supplemented/melded with categorical data such as a position Identifier, salary range of the position, position that the position reports to, whether the position is unionized or not, whether filled or vacated, whether a political appointment or not, age of incumbent, etc.
Analysis within a spreadsheet tool is insufficient unless some advanced stat analysis capability exists, but even then better tools exist. Some Org Charting capability would help. Though retired, I have had some 50 Years of statistical and analytics experience. I still tinker and also lead an Alteryx User Group that would support an Alteryx for the Good program with pro bono assistance to groups the vendor will qualify. The state and local governments as well as various non profit groups should consider such assistance though really need to have strict confidentiality set up.

Hey Hartford Alteryx users, I am currently studying at the University of Cambridge. My research investigates the acceptance of analytics tools at an individual level and I would love to get your opinion on this! Please find the link to my survey below. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd5dIpHJE_yJMoxEPpcaji38xHxvkElkWo9EJljlouV1QvaeQ/viewform?c=0&w=1 It's only a couple of questions! I promise, it won't take longer than 3-4 min 🙂 Your support would be really appreciated! And maybe you get some self-learning/reflection points out of this and you are contributing to research on the topic of self-service data preparation and analytics tools and hence to their customer experience! Have a nice day! Best, Svenja
