Fun challenge! Here is my solution.

Similar to others, I found the easiest approach to create a trade area around the end points of the original line. Then split to points, calculate distances, and find the greatest length. Pretty straight forward after that. Just combine all the data back together.

Trig was too painful, had to look for inspiration in comments. Very cool use of other tools to get round trig.
