In-database capabilities were first discussed at Inspire 2014. Later in August, Ned Harding, Alteryx CTO, shared the LockIn research project. Today, I'm happy to announce the availability of in-database tools as part of Alteryx Analytics 9.5! This new feature takes Alteryx value to the next level as tested and confirmed by the positive feedback we got from Beta customers:

"I am blown away… You have definitely gone to the next level. 9.1 took 5 minutes and used over 4 GB of memory on my side and 9.5 took 8 seconds and only used less than 1 MB ...wow!" Alteryx 9.5 Beta Program Customer

Why in-database?
Alteryx in-database toolsBig Data has made Alteryx even more relevant in a world where business insight is found via applying advanced analytics techniques to a variety of data. At the same time, dealing with high volumes means that processing needs to be done where the data resides.

Alteryx in-database tools go beyond the classic 'query' and compute advanced analytic modelsIn parallel, and related to Big Data, the database landscape evolved towards 'Analytic Platforms'. Beyond classic data storage and SQL processing, those platforms embark a number of capabilities such as in-memory, machine learning, geospatial, HDFS storage, etc… which allows them to go beyond the classic 'query' and compute advanced analytic models.

Lastly, the continuous expansion of Alteryx use in organizations means that users have more opportunities to leverage the corporate data infrastructures.

Release Strategy
I will cover more about those tools below, but being a Product Manager, I wanted to share a little bit of release strategy before we move on.

It is based on the following principles:

  • The main problem was large volumes of data transferred from databases to Alteryx, usually in the initial steps of blending.
  • While Alteryx users could always write their own SQL to pre-process the data, this is not acceptable to most users due to the skills involved.
  • Not all analytic capabilities would be available from the platform and not all available capabilities could be developed in one Alteryx release.

Our strategy is a multi-release roadmap starting with the favorite Alteryx tools for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, this covers the majority of the current needs per our usage data and allows business users to tackle a wide variety of data blending and preparation use cases without having to write a single line of SQL.
