Here's my solution.

First I combined the two spatial regions to get Rio de Janerio spatial region. Then I joined the took the list of 1920 losing area and the respective gaining land area names to the spatial 1920 map. I cut the old regions from the 1920 map and then added in the new spatial regions to get the most up to date Brazil map.
