A fantastic opportunity to practise chained apps. I wish it was better known that using the field names trick to populate a dropdown isn't a good way of doing things as it's not dynamic to changes in the data source! It creates an interface dependency on the workflow being run, which is chicken and egg, the interface can't load if the input data hasn't been read into the dropdown. It works temporarily because the workflow xml is written whilst developing in designer, but, if hosted on gallery this wouldn't work the way people expect. Anyway, good learning experience!
Such an interesting challenge! It took me a while but I finally figured it out :D
