my solution is very similar to the one posted by @Rachel_Burge !

I also looked for a further solution to what I would call the golfing ranking problem e.g. whereby the ranking would not be 1,2,3,4,5. It would be 1,3,4,8 etc..

My solution.  I took a more direct approach to solving this.  Not sure if in doing so I delved into using tools that are considered to be Intermediate and not limited to the Core set to do it this way, but it seemed (to me at least) to be a more straight-forward approach with fewer steps.
