Here is my solution:

1. First I join point of sale table and lookup table.

2. Then I apply filter on date as suggested in hint of question.

3. Then I use Formula tool to create two additional column for food item name and flag for it.

Difference in the raw count of records between my solution and the one provided I believe is because of the ambiguity around the phrase "since June 2013." I took that to mean the start of June.
