Here's my solution! It's is little bit extensive because I didn't want to populate the dropdown manually.

And thanks to @NicoleJohnson who showed how to display the result from a browser tool.

This was my first app so it was a bit of a learning curve. Had to peek at a few people's solutions to figure some of it out - particular thanks go to @PhilipMannering for saying how to auto-populate the drop-down from the unique values list!

Here is my solution.

Spoiler
This kind of Analytic App shows what I consider to be a weakness of Alteryx: being unable to easily use workflow data to populate interface tools (drop-down).
If workflows had an Initialization section, invoked before the interface tools are displayed, it seems like this could be possible.

In my workflow, I've created a section that will produce a distinct list of Position Numbers, that can be "copied and pasted" into the drop-down list configuration.
Then I decided to re-use this to perform a (pseudo) cross-join on the hierarchy data, in the filter I remove any invalid links between position numbers and the hierarchy and I filter on the selected Position Number.
