Here's my solution

It helps to change the source when trying to use the xml parse tool. After much frustration in the beginning I was able to develop a basic understanding of the child and root terms to be able to get the correct "child" output and then was able to multi-join all the data back together by the original record ID I used at the beginning of the workflow.
