I like the iterative macro challenges.  I learn something new with every one.

I was able to get the iterative output to return the same number of Kms as the answer.  The first spoiler is the workflow that answers both challenges.  The second spoiler is the macro from the second path.

Not very pretty. Had to write some R code to get it done.

Also got a different answer for the optimized distance (56K in mine vs 61K in the answer), not sure why. Seems that my output is accurate.
