No restart, no configuration changes, and no changes to the workflows. Log files do not show useful information. Has anyone experienced this sort of thing ?

Did you delete and re-add the credentials in the admin page? I've seen a few instances of this error message when removing credentials and adding them back to the admin page.

We did not do that. WE have over 200 workflows using the same shared credential, so I would prefer not to have to reset all of them.
I'm wondieriing if a Mongo database corruption too place. We run the mongo reindex workflow every day.

A MongoDB reindex workflow does not make any changes to other collections. It only handles the collection of locks and command queue items.
There can be many reasons for this problem. Better if you make a case with Alteryx. They will find the exact cause of this problem.
