"An Unhandled Exception Occurred" Error Message

Hi everyone,

I recently downloaded Alteryx Designer and I am on my free trial.

I wanted to use a custom formula function called DataUtils for my Alteryx. The xml file for the custom formula function is attached.

When I pasted this file in this location: ~\Alteryx\bin\RuntimeData\FormulaAddIn and tried to run Alteryx, Alteryx keeps giving me this "An Unhandled Exception Occurred" error message (please refer to screenshot below). From the moment I start Alteryx and then try to add or configure any tool, I always get this error. Even when I try to close Alteryx, it doesn't let me and gives me this error instead. I have to close Alteryx from the task manager.

I tried reinstalling Alteryx multiple times and this issue still persists. I also deleted that DataUtils file from that location but again this issue still persists.

My Alteryx version is 2025.1.2.142

I am not sure if this is relevant but this Alteryx is installed on a virtual machine.

Would be grateful if someone could help me resolve this.

Hi @FaizanB

The issue is likely with the xml file itself, where did you get it from?

Hi David, thanks for your reply.

I got the xml file from my company. I doubt it is an issue with that file because firstly I deleted it from that location and reinstalled Alteryx and tried to run it without this file and it still doesn't work. Secondly, everyone else in my company uses this file and it works perfectly fine.

Could there still be something wrong with the file? Or is it probably something else?

Hi @FaizanB

OK, in that case you will need to dig deeper. Was it working before you tried to install the file?

Here is a link to the KB article on this error, along with Known Causes and how to look in/gather the logs to try and identify the cause. It may have something to do with the installation on a VM, but if others have the same install and no issues it might not be - https://knowledge.alteryx.com/index/s/article/Unhandled-Exception-Occurred-Now-What

If nothing obvious jumps out you will likely need to log a call with support

Hi David,

Thanks for your help.

This does seem like a problem I will need to contact support for. However, I believe support is only for licensed users and I am still on my free trial. Do you know if there is a way to contact support for my free trial?

what are the system specs for the vm that you're running Alteryx on? when you uninstall Alteryx make sure you clean out any registry entries.

These are the system specs:

Processor Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6248R CPU @ 3.00GHz 2.99 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
Storage 80 GB Virtual HD
System Type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

How do I clean out registry entries when uninstalling Alteryx?

Hi @FaizanB

There is a KB here on completely unistalling Alteryx if it is of help - https://knowledge.alteryx.com/index/s/article/Complete-Uninstall-of-Alteryx-Designer-1583461464200

Thanks David!

Been working on this issue for days and seems like an issue of the VM maybe. Hopefully getting a new VM would solve this issue.

Will update if it does.

This has happened to me from time to time as well. I was able to fully resolve it after reinstalling Alteryx, but before that, simply closing and reopening Alteryx usually helped avoid the error as well. Hope this helps
