Workflows not opening from file explorer after 2021.3.5 update

Hi all!

Since updating my Alteryx Designer to 2021.3.5, I haven't been able to open a workflow by double-clicking in the file explorer. The only way to get it to open is by navigating through Designer.

Any ideas on how I can fix this? Or is this a version issue?

Hi @hfaub ,

You might need to re-create the association in Windows.

Right click and select "open with", then select the version of Alteryx you want to use.

If you haven't uninstalled the previous version you might get this issue. Try uninstalling the older version if it still appears in your programs list.

Hi @mceleavey ! Thanks for the response.

When I select "open with" it only shows my one Alteryx Designer option. I even tried going through my settings to 'Default Apps' to change it, and I still only saw the one Alteryx Designer listed.

hey @hfaub

Does that not work at that stage? Clicking open with, and then clicking open with Alteryx Designer?

What is the issue faced? Does it not open at all, or does it give you an error?

Cheers,
TheOC

Hey @TheOC

Nothing happens in both cases: when I double click the file, or when I click the 'open with' option.

hey @hfaub

Strange!
To be honest - first thing i would try is a reinstall of the 2021.3.5 version.
This should hopefully iron out the problem. If not let me know and i'll try to do further investigations.

Cheers,
TheOC

@hfaub , does dragging and dropping the file onto Alteryx work?

Yeah, I would suggest re-installing Alteryx.

And remember, there's always violence.

Hi @hfaub

If you're comfortable editing the registry, the file associations are in the "Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xxxx" where xxxx is the extension of interest, yxmd, yxwz, etc.   These point to the "Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Alteryx Apps" key  where you find the shell entries for open and edit.   The (default) value is the path to use to open the file with the application.  In my case this is "F:\Program Files\Alteryx\bin\AlteryxGui.exe".
