Issue with Tableau Tools plug in

I am having an issue when Using the Tableau Tools - Tableau Output tool. My error is saying "Error: Tableau Output (17): This tool uses Python version 3.8. Please install an updated tool YXI that uses Python 3.10 for Designer 2025.1." I have downloaded the most recent version of Tableau tools and asked chat GPT for help, but have found no answer. Has anyone else had this issue or know a way to fix it?

Yes, this is a common issue that many users face with Python-based connectors, including the Tableau Output tool, when upgrading to newer versions of Alteryx Designer (like 2025.1) which use a newer embedded Python environment (3.10). The error explicitly states that the Tableau Output tool you have installed is still using Python 3.8, which is incompatible with your current Designer version's Python 3.10. Even if you downloaded the "most recent" tool, you may have gotten a version that was not the latest Python 3.10-compatible YXI for Designer 2025.1. The fix is to obtain and install the specific, updated YXI file for the Tableau Output tool that has been rebuilt for the Python 3.10 environment and is intended for your version of Alteryx Designer. You should look for the official Alteryx Marketplace or Knowledge Base for the latest Tableau Tools YXI that explicitly supports Designer 2025.1 and Python 3.10. Sometimes, deleting the contents of the hidden .shiv folder in your user profile path (e.g., C:\Users\<username>\.shiv) and then reinstalling the correct YXI can also resolve lingering issues from the old Python environment.

Michel,

Thank you for the response! I downloaded the newest version and am now getting error messages saying, "Failed to read port assignment" and "Internal Error - Deadlock detected". Do you know what is the cause of these errors?

Hi @samuelwilcox,

The Tableau connector might get corrupted during installation, or it might not be completely installed.

Try running the workflow again, as sometimes there is a timeout when you run a workflow with the affected connector for the first time after installing it. If that does not resolve the issue, keep following the additional steps below.

  1. Navigate to C:\Users\%username%.
  2. Make a backup of the .shiv folder (rename or move the folder to some other folder—if the .shiv folder does not exist, skip to step 4).
  3. Delete the .shiv folder:

  1. Navigate to both of the following folder paths and delete the folder(s) for the connector version that is throwing the error messages listed above:

%ProgramData%\Alteryx\Tools

The AppData and ProgramData folders shown above are hidden by default. If you cannot see them in Windows File Explorer, go to the View menu/tab and check Hidden Items:

  1. Reinstall the connector (.yxi file):
    • If the connector has already been downloaded and is findable in Windows File Explorer, simply install it.
    • If you cannot find the connector's .yxi file, download a new one from the Alteryx Marketplace.
    • If installing on a server or one of the server's separate worker nodes, be sure to "Install for all users" by launching Designer as Admin, choosing the File => Open Workflow => Browse, navigating to the connector's .yxi file, and double-clicking it. When you see the following screenshot, click "Install for all users," then Install:

  1. Restart Designer.
