Holes in objects

Say we have a map with rivers. What can be done to output rivers (AKA holes) as their own objects?

 

What can be done to remove rivers altogether? 

Trying to understand the different options. Thanks

Recommend to go through the Tool Sample and the interactive lesson.

I am not sure I should answer, since these are straightforward questions and maybe come from the Exam.
