Email Reporting Tool

I need to use the formula tool to get specific fields for my email tool, but the email tool doesn't seem to work when I use the "use field" button, but it does work when I type my information in manually. Does anyone know how to fix that so I can continue you use the formula tool and "use field" option? I have attached screenshots.

Is there any noticeable difference between what you're typing in manually vs what the output of the formula tool is?
