Creating a grid with counts from two columns of data

Hi! I'm new to Alteryx and would very much appreciate some help.

Based on the attached spreadsheet, I'm trying to:

  • Make column heads out of each unique date in the date column, plus a column head for no date (denoted by a dash)
  • Make a row for each unique name in the name column
  • Fill in the columns/rows with a count of the number of times each unique date appears for each unique name

Thank you in advance for any advice!

This is a great use case for the Cross Tab Tool. The only extra step necessary would be to add another field via the Formula Tool called "Count" (or whatever you prefer) to track the frequency of each name via the Cross Tab Tool. Note: Cross Tab tool has weird renaming effect, where "_" replace all non-alphanumeric characters, so we can Use the Dynamic Rename Tool to fix that.

Also, note you have two options for output. Cross Tab uses nulls for values that do not otherwise exist. If you want to replace with nulls, then you can use the Multi-Field Formula Tool.

Hope this helps and Happy Solving!
