Clean Company Names and Create a Workflow

I have datasets for R&D Expenditures and Patents Granted Per Year (see excel files). I need helped cleaning the company names so the data from the two excel files can be joined in a manner where a correlation can be found between R&D Expenditures and Patents granted from 2012-2018. Can anyone provide tips or a workflow that achieves my objectives?
