According to Erin, someone who wins at Mario Kart seems to know every shortcut and trick, and it’s easy to assume they’re always choosing the perfect character and kart combo. But not anymore! We now have access to in-game data for every driver, kart/body, tire, and glider in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Using the datasets provided, the mission is to identify the most optimal combinations that deliver the best overall racing performance.

What You Need to Do

1. Compute the average value for each stat category (speed, acceleration, handling, etc.) across each individual dimension: driver, kart/body, tire, and glider.
2. Determine the average stat values for every combination of driver, kart/body, tire, and glider.
   For example: What is the average speed for a specific driver when paired with a given kart, tire, and glider?

3. For each combination, calculate a total weighted average using the provided weights table (or create your own!) to reflect the relative importance of each stat.

The final output should include each driver–kart–tire–glider combination, the corresponding average stat values, and a total weighted score.

Feeling a Little “Extra”?

Use a macro to automate repetitive tasks (such as calculating averages).

A: Click on your avatar, and you can reach your profile page and edit your profile. You will be able to edit your profile fields, change your avatar, signature settings, notification preferences, and followed content. 

Q: Where is Dark mode? 

A: This was a customization we built on the old platform. This will take us some time to add back to the new platform and is on our roadmap.

A: This is not the intended outcome of the migration, and we are aware that ranks aren't appearing as expected and are working to resolve.

A: Because labels now span across the full Community, some filters may return broader results than expected. We are working to improve this with more targeted labeling. 

Q: Why am I seeing threaded replies? 

A: When you reply to a comment within a post, a threaded comment will appear below the comment. If you reply to the post, then the comment will show directly below the original post.

the recently released Sharepoint Connector 3.1 is not able to read all files of a selected folder.

The previous Sharepoint Input Tool was able to do that.

Is it planned to re-implement that functionality into the new release in the near future?

In the meantime, are there alternatives to use (except an older version of the Sharepoint tool)?

Last Week’s Favourite Solution:

I am fully aware that the last post was over a week ago but old habits die hard so this section's title will remain consistent! On that note, last week’s favourite solution award goes to @AncientPandaman. Instead of generating every possible two-digit fraction and then testing each one, they realised that by focusing on the structure of the cancellation itself, only four specific shapes of fraction needed to be considered. Using this knowledge, @AncientPandaman was then able to create only these fraction combinations , avoiding any which would be guaranteed to fail. Please find their solution on page one of last week’s post or click here.

Definitions:

• Factorial: The product of all positive integers up to and including a given number. For example, 5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120.

Mathematical Theory:

The key to solving this problem efficiently is identifying an upper bound for the input data. Already, this may be sounding familiar to some of you, as the same idea was used back in Project 30 (Digit Fifth Powers).

Without an upper bound, we could technically search an unlimited range of numbers, which is clearly not practical. In this case, the idea is to think about the extreme case where every digit is a 9, and see when the resulting sum can no longer keep up with the size of the number itself.

Since 9! (362,880) is the largest factorial of any single digit, the maximum possible sum of digit factorials for any given number occurs when every digit is a 9. This means, for any number of digits, the maximum sum is simply the digit count multiplied by 362,880.

Lets test this out with a few different digit counts:

• For a 7 digit number: 7 × 362,880 = 2,540,160, which itself has 7 digits, so this range is still possible.
• For an 8 digit number: 8 × 362,880 = 2,903,040, which only has 7 digits. This means no 8 digit number could ever equal the sum of the factorials of its digits.

This tells us that 7 digits is the maximum possible size for any valid number. More specifically, we only need to check numbers up to 2,540,160, giving us a clear upper bound for our input!

Method:

1) Input all whole numbers from 10 to 2,540,160 (our upper bound as found in the previous section). The problem excludes 1! and 2! and it should be clear that no other single-digit values could work, so we start from 10. Make sure to also, create a duplicate column containing the number stored as a string. This will allow us to parse out each digit individually.

2) Parse the digits out of the string, so each digit appears on its own row, linked back to its original starting number.

3) For each digit, calculate the factorial value, using the factorial function in the formula too, then sum the factorial values per original starting number.

4) Filter to only those records where the sum of the digit factorials equals the original number.

5) Sum the remaining values together to arrive at the final answer.

6) Submit your answer to the Project Euler Website!

Summary:

Finding a sensible upper bound was once again the key to this challenge. Without it, the input data could have been infinite. By considering the extreme case where all digits are 9, we were able to quickly narrow the search space down to a manageable size, making the rest of the workflow straightforward.

Submitting a Case

For Support, utilizing MyAlteryx is the easiest and most efficient way to open up a case. When submitting a case, Customers should provide at least the following information:

• Attach the Tech Support File generated in Designer
• Identify whether experiencing a system crash, data loss, or security vulnerability
• Full description of the issue and expected results
• Is this an issue with a database? If so, what database and database version, connection (ODBC, OCI, OLEDB, etc.), driver and driver version is utilized?
• Is this issue isolated to one user or one machine?
• Exact wording or screenshot of all issue-related error messages, a screenshot of available storage space on the drive Alteryx is installed, and any applicable log files.

Request Attention

Customers with non-Standard support entitlements are able to utilize the "Request Attention" feature for their support cases when certain conditions are met, including increases in severity, priority, and requested communication cadence. This feature is applicable to support cases that fall within the supported guidelines above including, but not limited to, products covered, support hours, severity levels, and target response times.

To request attention, customers can navigate to their open support case within MyAlteryx. The "Request Attention" option will initiate a submission which should include the following information:

• Reason for Attention
  • Severity Increase: The impact has increased in scope in terms of functionality and/or affected users.
    • e.g. The issue has been confirmed to be impacting all users of the product.
• Lack of Progress: The communication regarding the state of the request requires updating
  • e.g. Awaiting next steps towards the resolution of the request.
• Priority Increase: The urgency in which the request requires to be addressed has increased.
  • e.g. A deadline, dependent on the request, has been moved up.
  • Detailed Summary
    • A detailed description of the reason and the changes or new developments that prompted the request for attention.

Upon submission of the request for attention, the Customer Support Team will confirm receipt, assess against the provided criteria, and communicate next actions within the support case.

-We recently switched computers at the office and had to download a new version of Alteryx. The problem is that we have a workflow connected to Google Drive tools, which in turn connect to spreadsheets. However, because the workflow is quite large and has multiple connections, I can't open it; it keeps generating errors or the window remains blank. Do you know how to fix this so I don't lose the work I've already done?

I would like to extract the identities/locations of sanctioned entities from the U.S. Sanctioned List Service.

OFAC Specially Designated Nationals List - Sanctions List Service

This XML document marks sanctioned entities with the <entity id="12345"> tag, and often under it are variations of the name, identified by <"name id="23456">.

The list seems to be too dense or too multi-layered for the XML Parse tool to unravel.

Has anyone had experience with opening up multi-layered dense XML documents in Alteryx?

In April, we celebrate Earth Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and taking action for environmental conservation and sustainability.

This weekly challenge delves into temperatures, highlighting their crucial role in our planet's health. The dataset presents comprehensive information on global temperature records, covering various countries worldwide. It includes average temperature records in Celsius for major cities from 1743 to 2013.

To solve this challenge, we will be concentrating on the data from 1950 onwards.

Your tasks are as follows:

1. Determine which cities have average temperatures greater than or equal to 25 degrees.
2. Among the cities identified in the previous task, identify the country with the highest number of such cities.
3. Examining all countries within the dataset, pinpoint the year with the highest average temperature and the year with the lowest average temperature across the globe.

As the snow begins to fall and the year comes to a cozy close, it’s the perfect time for a bit of holiday fun. While the Elf on the Shelf is busy reporting back to Santa, another mischievous character has gone missing...

Waldo (or Wally, depending on where you’re celebrating) has snuck off for a little hide-and-seek adventure. Guess where? Inside an Excel folder, of all places!

He's somewhere deep within the "Places" directory, but he’s layered himself under folders, subfolders, and buried sheets, a classic Waldo move. We don’t know:

• Which folder he's in,
• Which subfolder he chose,
• What file he’s hiding in,
• Or even which sheet he’s nestled on.

I have seen that SharePoint tools have been deprecated and that it is recommending using Microsoft SharePoint Connector v3 from the Input Data tool

Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated

I’ve compiled a set of best practices I use to clean messy tabular flat‑file data, most often from CSVs or PDF‑to‑Excel exports for general ledger, payroll, sales, and similar reports. These requests usually involve applying the same cleanup steps across many files or sheets and combining them into a single table under tight deadlines and inconsistent data structures.

These tips focus on a quick and fast cleanup rather than long‑term or repeatable workflows, so I avoid macros or advanced concepts.

Let me know if these are helpful or if there are other approaches worth considering.

Common Tools

Input Data Tool (Link)

• I often output the file name as a field to use for validation or pivoting in the Summarize tool.
• Use “Start Data Import on Line” or the Select Records tool when the first lines of data or headers are buried below report formatting.
• I enable “First Row Contains Data” for instance where I know the headers are not able to be used. This is also helpful if you’re using the workflow for multiple datasets and you do not want to manually identify the needed columns each time.
  • If using the headers in the files later, use the Dynamic Rename tool and the mode Use Headers From First Row. Or, use the tool to label staging fields quickly; for example, renaming all the fields “Pre” if you know you will use those column names later.

Record ID (Link)

• Add a Record ID as soon as the structure stabilizes.
• This has many benefits, such as:
  • Track how rows move, disappear, or duplicate.
  • Serve as a join field.
  • Functions as a sort field.
  • Make it simple to filter for specific records when troubleshooting or validating.

Data Cleansing (Link)

• I find benefit with Remove Null Columns, but avoid Remove Null Rows as I have experienced valid rows drop unexpectedly.
• I avoid Replacing Nulls with Zeros or Blanks because doing so changes how the end users interprets missing values. It can also make tracking difficult when comparing to source material.
• I do trim whitespace, however, there are cases when keeping them is beneficial. For example, if a field has fixed-width padding then you can use that to isolate it using a length formula. If I were to have removed the whitespace, then I would lose the fixed-width as an anchor.
• If applicable, I apply Modify Case, preferably to Title Case, if it helps with readability and the end user approves of it.

Union (Link)

• While this tool is straightforward, I recently came across a use case where the order of a union mattered.
  • When joining between multiple sheets, I realized only one sheet had the headers intact, so that sheet had to be ordered first. Otherwise, the effectiveness of the Multi-Row Formula tool I was using would be disrupted.
• To set the order, enable “Set a Specific Output Order” in the Configuration pane.

Multi-Row Formula (Link)

• This tool is critical and comes up in almost every request. This is because the reason someone reaches out for help is often because they were having trouble filling in important fields across the report so that they can pivot and filter.
• For example, the use case could be to take the account or department number that only appears once in the beginning of the section, or several account numbers throughout the report, and populate it with every record.
• To configure the tool for this use case, select “Update Existing Field” for the field you want filled in. Do not select “Group By”.
• To fill down a null value from the previous row (most common): IF IsNull([Field]) THEN [Row-1:Field] ELSE [Field] ENDIF
• To pull up a value from the next row: IF IsNull([Field]) THEN [Row+1:Field] ELSE [Field] ENDIF

DateTime (Link)

• Converting dates to the right format is important for the end user to be able to filter and calculate dates within Excel.
• One frustration with this tool in Alteryx is that it requires you to rename the output column. My suggestion is to suffix the original field with “Pre” and then name the final name of the date field within the DateTime tool. Then drop the original field once validated. This preserves field lineage and avoids naming confusion after.

Summarize (Link)

• The Summarize tools is used for subtotal and total validations.
• Also, use the Summarize tool if a column which informed a level of detail is being removed and you need to consolidate the records to a lower level of detail. For example, if the end user requests to remove any employee level of detail.

Containers and Annotations (Link)

• I use containers to group workflow phases and temporarily disable work during testing.
• I rename annotations on tools I expect to revisit so the purpose is clear at a glance. I turn off the ones

Design Patterns

File and folder structure

• I found some version of this folder logic helpful for me for most Alteryx projects: Data > Workflow > Output > Deliverables.
  • Outputs could be intermediate YXDBs for use between workflows or files that I want to review or format before delivery.
  • Deliverables holds the the final requestor-facing copy. I keep it separate from Output so that I do not accidentally overwrite work an end user has done.

Review expected deliverable with the end user

• Ensure that you are only working with data that is important to the requestor or end user.

Deliver a sample for proof-of-concept

• If the data is large or there is urgency, working on a sample and sending it to the end user to validate is helpful could prevent future rework before working through the whole dataset.

Use YXDB file type for efficiency

• I consolidate data into the YXDB file type early if the data source spans many files, periods, or formats. The YXDB file type is developed by Alteryx and processes significantly faster than Excel. If I have multiple Alteryx workflows, I’ll output the intermediary files between them as YXDBs.

Isolate columns rather than clean

• Rather than try to clean up an existing field, I find it’s often less of a headache to isolate the values I need into a new field.
  • For example, rather than try to clean up the “Credit” column, I’ll prefer to create a new “Credit” column using the Formula tool and extract the data I need from the original column.
  • Similarly, if a column has multiple pieces of information that needs to be separated, such as Year and Month, I’ll create a new Year column and a new Month column to capture those details.
• This limits the number of considerations needed to make when trying to remove data, as you cannot usually see all the irregularities you’ll encounter in a large dataset, prevents unintentional impact onto other fields, and gives me more control if I want to make a change later.
• I can use the original column for reference and then deselect it when complete.

Troubleshooting by isolating records

• Use the Filter tool to isolate the problematic Record IDs before the issue appears and follow them through the workflow.

Validating totals before handoff

• Subtotals and grand totals from the original dataset need to be removed to prevent double counting. Once isolated, I’ll recreate the totals using the Summarize tool when I’m complete. Then, I’ll use the Join tool to compare them to what was listed in the report.
• For the Join, I label the totals from the report “Expected” and the ones I create called “Actual”.
• To identify errors across many records, I create a field to calculate Expected – Actual. For the difference, I use the absolute function ABS() to normalize negative and positive differences and then use the Round() function to normalize the amounts to two decimal places; otherwise, minuscule differences will show up as errors.
  • For example,
  • Difference Amount = Abs(Round([Expected Amount – Actual Amount], 2))
• Then, I use a filter to identify any differences > 1, as the results from > 0 often include differences due to rounding.

To summarize, these tips reflect my approach to data prep for tabular reports when the ask is urgent and the source is imperfect. If you have approaches that you also find beneficial, any suggestions, or corrections, please drop a message.

This data set provides information related to various clothes-size-prediction. Using this data, find the minimum and maximum weight, age, height per size and the percentage that each size represents rounding the numbers to 2 decimal places. If a line of data is incomplete remove it.

Hint: Nobody is under the age of 10 or over 100 years old.

Hi all, 

I have column with "date" date type field and the values there are for instance "DEC-20", "NOV-20". 

I would like to change this column to the number of the month, e.g. "12", "11", ... . 

Anyone has a simple solution to do so? 

Alternatively, it it's easier to convert to the month number from the string, please say so. In my workflow I currently converted the string already to a date field. So both options are fine for me.

Ideally we'd like to be able to test the implementation on a test tenant before changing our Prod site. Does this exist?

What about if our tech team signed up for a free trial to do the test? Does the free trial include ability to configure SSO?

Hello fellow server nerds

We use custom encrypted macros to get the active gallery user that is running the workflow.  These use a MongoDB tool to map the __UserID to the resulting name.  We encrypt them so we can distribute the macro to the users without giving them access to the server MongoDB.  

Does any one know if the MongoDB password persists through a Server upgrade?
