Thanks to everyone who attended the Montreal Alteryx User Group Event on Sep 12th, 2018. We had a great reboot meeting at the Keyrus offices in the Old Port. Thanks @MMehdi!
For those who came and those who couldn’t make it, here is a recap of the event. Attached is the presentation.
25 people (including the leaders) from 13 companies attended the event. After a pizza and networking session at the beginning of the evening, Freddy Colina @fredcolina, Analytics Manager at Lasik MD kicked off the session by welcoming the attendees, introducing the leaders of the Montreal Alteryx User Group and showing the audience profile according to the previously sent poll:

62% of the respondents have one year of less of Alteryx experience and 92% have used it between 1 and 5 years

54% consider themselves intermediate or advanced users

84% would like to see Use Cases and 77% would like to have hands-on sessions

Session 1 - Use Case: Automating Dashboards with Alteryx Automation Add-On
Next, William Chan @williamchan who works for Air Canada in the Product Distribution department, showed how the airline went from Excel-based reports and “databases” to automated ETL in Alteryx and up-to-date dashboards in Power BI.
Session 2 - Simplifying Your Data Procedures: Alteryx Best Practices
After William’s session, Scott Carr @ScottyCarr, Senior Consultant from KPMG, presented a great session about the ten commandments of Alteryx Best Practices when working on big projects, namely:
- 1. You shall have a clean and consistent folder structure
- 2. You shall split your workflows into logical groups
- 3. You shall consolidate and simplify your data
- 4. You shall validate completeness of your data
- 5. You shall use as little tools as possible
- 6. You shall document your workflows like it was your diary
- 7. You shall use join tool responsibly
- 8. You shall embrace the use of macros sooner than later
- 9. You shall cleanup your workflow (YES, THOSE BROWSES)
- 10. You shall check warnings, errors and validate outputs
It was a great session that sparked comments from everyone in the room.
Alteryx, the Community
Next came Julie Hamel @JulieH, Director of Global Community at Alteryx, who showed everyone the power of the community website, the value of the Alteryx Academy and a trove of other useful resources available to novice as well as advanced users of Alteryx
The evening ended with even more networking, open discussions and tips exchange among everyone in the room.
