Hi, Maveryx! The Alteryx SparkED team and Southern Methodist University are planning a DataThon in January, and they need our help! Our Dallas/Fort Worth Alteryx User Group has been invited to assist, and we will have plenty of opportunities to volunteer - DataThons are energetic and inspiring events held on university campuses, where teams of students compete to solve real-world tasks in Alteryx. In 2022 and 2023, the Alteryx SparkED team held DataThons at the University of Texas at Dallas, and the events were a lot of fun, as well as an excellent experience for the students in applying Alteryx to create solutions in data analytics! In 2022, various corporations participated by providing industry problems for the students to solve, and in 2023, students mined open source data to generate answers to numerous community needs.
We would like to invite area corporations to participate by providing a real-world scenario and use case that needs a solution. Students will participate by performing data analytics to answer questions and create results, and present their findings and workflows to the volunteer judges as well as the corporation. If your company (or a company you know) would like to participate as the use case provider, please email me at deanna.sanchez@novageographica.com or reply to this post - we would be excited to have you join the event and promote your company on social media!
Volunteers are also needed for various positions during the event dates, and we are looking for user group members to assist. Some of the available roles include:
- Mentoring SMU students during the DataThon and providing guidance in using Alteryx
- Judging the 1st and 2nd rounds of presentations and workflows created by the students
- Assisting with general operations: Sign-in, name tags, swag handouts, distributing forms, etc.
- Managing volunteer lists, dates and times available, and scheduling

We had a great turnout of volunteers from our user group at the 2023 UTD DataThon (thanks to each of you who participated!), and we would love to have our members be a part of this inaugural SparkED DataThon for SMU as well!
Dates are not yet finalized, but are tentatively set for mid-January. More information will be posted soon, and we welcome any members who are interested in volunteering - whether it be for an hour, half day, or full day, any amount of time you can dedicate to helping students learn about Alteryx and data analytics is time well spent!
