Old Schedule on latest publish version does not work

We have defined a schedule on a workflow.there were some changes to be done to the workflow,hence we opened the workflow from gallery, did changes and saved back which created the next version. Now the problem is existing schedule is not working on the new version.It still runs the old version.
Why it behaves so wired and how this can be fixed as everytime new schedules can't be created.
