Lagged variables

I have 2 variables that I wish to compare.  One appears to lag the other and the team believe this is due to a wrong time being recorded rather than a real effect.  How do I go about finding out what lag there is between them that would optimise the correlation between them (i.e. how much (and how) do I need to shift one variable so I can compare them?

Do you have any sample data or workflow snapshot that would give a little more insight into the tools and configuration that you are using?
