Date Conversions

I'm trying to convert a string, e.g., 170630 (June 30, 2017) to a date.  I'm using the DateTime tool with a customer format:  yyMMdd, but I'm not getting.  The error message I'm getting looks like it's trying to read the day as the month.  For the ones that don't return nulls, they look like this:  170701 (July 1, 2017) is shown as 1707-01-01 00:00:00.  I don't see why the custom format doesn't work.
