Stumped building a connecter like the Google Analytics connector

hi folks

we have been asked to build a connector - similar to the Google Analytics  one.

it is for a 3rd party commercial web site that requires authorisation / credentials / etc

for us, using download tool + a parser is already well understood 

however the GA connector has a popup / splash page (html) for collecting credentials which we have been asked to recreate but can't fathom out what we need to change / copy / add to our new connector.

does anyone know of an article that could help us understand the basics of how such an html popup / splash page should be tackled.
