Formula Tool not letting me edit with expression editor

I am trying to use the formula to to edit with the expression editor, but when I click on the variable of my choice, it only shows 'Empty expression', and will not let me edit using the tool's drop down windows. Any suggestions on how to fix?

Hi @dboyd 

This error is commonly due to having nothing in your expression editor.

Weird thing you're not being able to select any of the options in the left menu (Functions, Constants, etc.)

Have you tried to delete this Formula Tool and replace with another?

I'm curious about your append tool in your workflow-- looks like you have your larger dataset going into the source input node instead of the target input node. Usually if you are appending an aggregate measure or measures, you want that piece to go into the source node. Not sure if this would affect the formula tool downstream, but worth testing.
