I deiced to make it more useful by adding a link to the help doc for each tool! I manually setup a list of the help doc URLs and added it to the input. Then I modified a report text tool to include the link.

Created an interactive dashboard in Tableau where you can click on the tool category and only the tools in that category show up. Hovering over the tools shows basic tool information. Included the Alteryx workflow showing writing of .tde and the export of the tool files as .png. Zipped the files below.

Hi,

Maybe somebody can help me out, I try to dynamically filter the output on Tool Category with a List Box in a macro. However this only works once, since the Replace a Specific String in the Update Value tool is overwritten. I'm fairly new to Alteryx and couldn't figure a solution that would work more than once. Any suggestions?

Further testing revealed that my list box is only working when one box is ticked. A multiple selection is not passed through to the filter. What am I doing wrong?

@Ilías In your action tool, You should change your separator from double to single quotes to match your start and end text. That looks like it would do it. You can use the interface designer > Test View > Open Debug to test out your macro and see what values it's actually replacing. You can see the quotes mismatch:

As we have a few weeks off, I decided to go all out on this one as a last bit of Alteryx effort for the year. So I made a personalised Periodic Table for all those who take part in the weekly challenges. See your own Periodic Table here: Periodic Table of alteryx Tools - Weekly Edition

I used the following steps to build this:

Scrape all of the Weekly Challenge links from the Welcome & Index Page
For each link calculate the number of pages and download all of the html
Within each downloaded page scrape all links to attached workflows
Download every workflow
Parse the XML from each workflow to extract the tool information
Re-jig the data ready for the final output to .tde

Not the most innovative solution I've ever submitted since I more-or-less borrowed ideas from others for most of it and then re-used parts & pieces from my challenge 97 & 98 workflows... but I at least have a slightly different end product than the (TOTALLY AWESOME AMAZING AWE-INSPIRING) solutions that have already been provided! I borrowed general concepts from @LordNeilLord and @Laurap1228, then took a detour to reach my final destination.

In the spirit of making New Years Resolutions (and hopefully keeping this one!), I chose to display not the tools that I had used during the year, but instead the tools that I hadn't used in my Weekly Challenge submissions - so my resolution is to try to find creative ways to use some of these in 2018!

I have copies of my weekly challenge submissions saved on my computer in one folder, so I just pointed to that folder to get the code for each workflow... and then I created a mapping table that converted the tool name used in the yxdb from Challenge 98 to the tool name that is actually used in the code for each workflow (a manual step... not pretty, or ideal, but being as this was my first foray into interpreting XML code in an Alteryx workflow... it was good enough for now! And gives me something else to work on in 2018 haha.)

* NOTE: I know that this is not 100% accurate, since I find it incredibly hard to believe that I haven't included Input, Output, Count Records, Select Records, or Data Cleansing in one of my 98 Weekly Challenge submissions to date...

But the rest of the tools included in this "Haven't Used Yet" List appear to be reasonable, so I'll dig into this a little further to see if I can figure out where those few exceptions might be hiding in the XML code that I missed in the first go around.

... And as a bit of a personal note on this last submission for 2017... I'd just like to add that it's awfully fun finishing up the year with my 99th challenge, considering I only completed my first one in March!! Truly incredible how much you can learn and grow in 9 short months, just by being involved in this incredible Community. I am so excited about the connections I've made with others, both virtually and in person... and I can't even begin to describe how thankful I am for the amazing career opportunity I was given this year that is 100% due to the skills I've learned from this Community and the connections I made at Inspire. It's hard to imagine how 2018 will be able to top this year... but hanging around with all of you, I just know it's going to be even better!

Thank you thank you THANK YOU to all of you for helping me grow - I love sharing this wild world of Alteryx with you!

So - there's loads that was interesting and insightful here - some highlights for me:

- I was so tempted to steal @patrick_digan 's mapping between tool and help-text. Not sure if you did this the hard way Patrick, or if you found this config buried in a file somewhere? Either way - nice!
- @TaraM then did a custom style-sheet; and linked this up to the tool mastery - great idea (especially since this was not hard-coded but a dynamic pull so it will self-update)
- Super impressed with @LordNeilLord 's idea of scraping everyone's weekly submissions. This ties back to a discussion we had at Inspire - nice play my friend!
- The idea of a personal tool inventory for learning - @Laurap1228 and @NicoleJohnson . This is also a super useful idea.
- Few of us went for Tableau viz - @ggruccio ; @PhilipMannering ; @SophiaF (who did this in challenge 98 already)
- And some Analytical Apps to filter - @Ilías

My approach:

Learned from @SophiaF 's post in challenge 98 how to create the custom shapes in Tableau.
Then went about seeing what signal we can find in the data about the usage patterns. Built a tableau dash that allows you to filter the tools by category in 2 ways - one is in the Periodic table view; and the other is in a modified frequency plot.

Taking out some of the categories, you can begin to see the pattern

This view shows the pattern most clearly
You can see from the last image, that some tool categories are significantly over-represented in the upper rows of the table (higher ranks of usage). This may be an indicator that there's a bigger barrier to learning for some of the other tools.

Also - looking at the usage, you can clearly see evidence of what was discussed at inspire - that people first use Alteryx for data prep, and then often move up the stack.

Finally - Poppy (our cat) just wanted to mention that she was exhausted after all the Alteryx-ing that she's done this year. It's been a very busy year for Poppy - what with her first birthday; first celebrity photo appearance at Inspire EU; all the help she gave with the new computer build; and now all these weekly challenges and posing for the picture requested by @TaraM and @LeahK with the bandana! Phew - time to get a quick snooze in!

Here's wishing everyone a little well-earned rest over the new-year (with Poppy leading the way in the resting piece)!

Finally!! For whatever reason, my graphics wouldn't render properly when I used a table, so had to redo all of the overlays, etc., and create the images for the small background.

Included a description of the tools, and a URL to the help page (done manually) in the new workflow.

Output is in Tableau. Lots of fun!! You can choose to highlight by tool category. If you hover over a tool, you'll see a description of that tool. If you click on a tool, it will launch to the help page for that tool.

Cheers! I added a hyperlink to each tool that links to the Alteryx help page for that tool, and I turned the workflow into an Analytic app that sorts by tool category and allows the user to select the categories that they want to see.

2) export data from Alteryx to a .hyper Tableau extract file
3) create a Tableau Dashboard with that .hyper file as an input, and reading shapes from pngs folder

Same as @patrick_digan and others, I thought it would be handy to link to the help documentation for each tool, so I added a hyperlink to the tool rank number.

My colleagues and I are doing a walking/fitness challenge leading up to Alteryx Inspire, and I needed to scrape the tool images for our tracking map. Luckily, I had parsed out the help URLs while I was at it, so I had a list ready to go! I did have to adjust a few tools such as the (deprecated) Charting tool (now Interactive Chart).

As per I struggled with the reporting tools. Outputting the tool icons as pngs made them lose their alignment (and just look awful) So I had to ouput as .htm files and then use Alteryx to create a .bat script that screenshotted google chrome to convert them all to .png. Took some trial and error, but got there in the end 🙂

Played around with using tools as pixels for pixel pictures. Tableau is currently not working, so I don't have pics, but the workflow does render very large pictures in HTML. Tool backgrounds change for some results, such as all blue or all green to make the picture stand out. The workflow is set up to use a 26 column grid. I create the "pixels" in an Excel worksheet then use that layout to create the list for the text input. Each layout has a unique identifier for the app filter to the correct dataset.
