Challenge #257: Palindromes

A solution to last week's challenge can be found here.

Palindromes are words that are spelled the same backwards as forwards. They aren't inherently better than other words, but they have a special name and we think that counts for something! Speaking of counting...

For this week's challenge, count the number of palindromes in the provided dataset. Also, find the most common starting letter for the palindromes and count the number of palindromes that begin with that letter.

I was able to parse the palindromes with a simple formula, after that filtering to get the data was a breeze!

The formula I used to detect palindromes is:
IF ((ReverseString(Right([Words], (length([Words]) - Mod(length([Words]), 2)/2)))) = (Left([Words], (length([Words]) - Mod(length([Words]), 2)/2)))) THEN 1 ELSE 0 ENDIF

This formula takes the last half of the word (excluding one character for odd length words), flips it, and compares it to the first half of the word (excluding one character for odd length words). Awesome to see Modulo is available in the formula operation, super useful for dynamic formulas like this!

I was thinking for a while how to approach this problem even considered an iterative macro (to cut off first and last letter and compare etc..). Then just for fun I checked what functions are available in alteryx - and the problem suddenly became very easy (hint hint)! That's the power of Alteryx I guess!

Just found the ReverseString() function the other day... Would have taken a few more steps if there was mixed case, spaces, and punctuation. As it is, we just had to compare the string to the reversed string.
