Challenge #240: Every Vote Counts!

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream? Hard to choose just one? With ranked choice voting (RCV), you don’t have to! With RCV, you can rank your favorites in order of choice.

For this week’s challenge, we have the results of a Favorite Flavors of Ice Cream poll. Build a workflow to conduct a RCV to find the voters’ favorite flavor and the total number of voting rounds. If a flavor receives more than half of the first choices, that flavor wins. If not, the flavor with the fewest first choice votes is eliminated. For voters who picked that flavor as their “Number 1”, their votes shift to their next choice. The process continues until a flavor has more than half the votes. Fun Challenge! While an iterative macro would ideally be the best solution, I ultimately decided to use a more basic test/repeat model with some fail safes built in to output the winner and stop data streaming when found.

For fun, I solved it dynamically without any macros. I used @jdunkerley79 's Alteryx Abacus formula add ins. They are super powerful when combined with Generate Rows tools.

I'm working towards my advanced certification and trying to get practice with iteration macros. I have a programming background but can't quite seem to get the hang of how they exit.

I got this one to work, but I think it's kind of clunky. If anyone can explain a better way to iterate/exit I would appreciate it! I updated this to use the CrewTest expect equals tool instead of Test tool. I realized I had configured it wrong, so went for easier option.

This one took longer than it should because I misread the instructions and built a beautiful macro to solve an entirely different problem. Fortunately I was able to adapt it to the real problem -- a great example of how workflows are much easier to refactor than code or spreadsheet programs.
