I think I've got a unique solution here.

I assign each product a unique power of 2 and then sum up each of the purchase lines and count the unique totals

I had a bit of a problem with understanding the task. "How many combinations of the same objects were purchased" is not a good wording fro me.... "How many combinations of the same objects there were" would be better or "How many different shopping lists there were". It went quick after I understood it :)
