Here is my solution.  But I see many much more elegant solutions being posted.  Thank you everyone!

Parsed the dates using Date time tool, then used generate rows to fll in the gaps between start and end dates. Formula to add day and month, year information. Then again to mark weekdays and weekends. Filter out weekends summarize to find the total  counts per month.
