After getting the result in two rows for each date and then summarizing, I decided to try to write a second multi-row formula to solve and put the result in a single row for each date.  Both methods attached:

After looking at how other workflows I'm beginning to wonder if my correct answer is just a fluke.

 

Looking at the data, I could see groupings by date (start, work, finish) so I created lines for each date group.  I then used the Spatial Info tool to provide distances and voila!

 

Almost too simple.
