Challenge #251: Lunacy

kelly_gilbert

This took a while to think through! In the end, I went with a configuration table, so I could tweak the size/offset distance to get a better match.

The only thing waning was my confidence in completing this challenge

FINALLY. note - I didn't expect the Third Quarter and First Quarter lines to magically appear when I built my spatial objects so I included the formulas for them as well. My spacing is a bit off (specifically my Crescents are a bit far from the Quarters) but overall I felt very satisfied to finish this one.

Who knew that spatial could be used for mocking up the phases of the moon!

I went with a concave shape for the phases to make it look like it's being munched like PacMan.    I may have to redo this to make it more accurate.

Solution was to move the X point a little each time, then draw a 100 mile trade area, and cut that out from the moon.

Re-did this - now with a non-PacMan set of moon phases 🙂

Inspiration here from @kelly_gilbert 's elegant solution (although I'm not as comfortable with the formulae as Kelly is, so I did this mainly with regular tools)

WOW, that was tough. Learned a lot about spatial tools!

Wow, this one was fun! I'm new to using the spatial tools, so had to look a ton of this up but I'm happy with the results. 😀

I could have shortcutted the reversed images, but I created a separate flow for each.  Fun challenge, especially to get the gibbous moons correct.
