Looking at the published solution, I may have over-engineered this one. The instructions indicated the solution should not have two inputs, but also indicated data was required "for each sheet within each XLS workbook" (despite including data from only 'Sheet1' of each workbook in the published solution?), so it made sense to me to include an input for each tab in the source workbooks that contained data ('Sheet1' and 'Sheet2'), parse the row / column data I needed, and then Union the results.
