For the macro bit, you could call Excel from a [Run Command] module.  Inside that Excel file you could have a macro that launches on an open event.  That macro could do its work and then save the results.

As far as the estimation of ingesting multiple Excel files and transforming the data into a single database.

  1. How you will access those sheets (do you need to build FTP calls (more complex) or will they be local (less complex)
  2. How many Excel files/Sheets would be a consideration
  3. Whether or not those files/sheets all share a common schema (layout)
  4. Is the data clean (or do you need to QC it on ingestion)
  5. Less important, but always good to know, size of the data in each sheet (across all sheets)
  6. Do you need to build a UI (analytic App) that let's users select directories, locations, file name(s)/type(s)?
  7. Do you need business logic to transform the data (aggregate, allocate, deaggregate, calculate new measures, etc.)

If your requirements call for a fixed directory with multiple Excel workbooks that share a common schema, the project will be much smaller than if you need to provide a UI that retrieves the files from a server and all of the files have different formats.

To estimate the project, break down the main components.

  1. Access of files
  2. Transforming into common data shape
  3. Data cleansing/hygiene
  4. Data transformation
  5. Persisting the data (database write)
  6. Etc.
