When using the Demographic Analysis tools in the Alteryx Designer there are two types of variables you’ll be able to utilize from the Allocate Engine: built-in and virtual variables. Built-in variables are the most granular demographic measures the engine offers and virtual (custom) variables are calculated from these built-in variables. If you’re interested in taking a look at the underlying formulas that constitute these variables, there are two ways to do so:   Through the Alteryx Data Products GUI   You can find the Alteryx Data Products Allocate Interface in your start menu   From here just locate your variable in the “Variables” tab   Then select “File” and “Variable Information”     The Allocate Metainfo tool In the Allocate Metainfo tool select “Variables”     After running the workflow, the list of variables in your chosen dataset will be output, along with their constituent formulas (if they are virtual variables) You can also create your own custom variables! For your reference, a list of demographic variables that are included in the Alteryx Data Packages can be found here.

Once you've installed the Alteryx software, your license file and datasets, there is a quick and easy way to test that everything has been configured correctly. Step1 Attached to this article is an Alteryx module. Double click on that icon. It will open Alteryx and ask if you'd like to Import Module Package. Choose a location on your desktop using the Disk icon, then click Import at the bottom of the window. The Module Import Process window will open then you'll see Import Complete. When asked if you want to load the module, click Yes. The module will open.                                              Looking at the module you'll see a workflow of tool icons in the center. To the left of the icons is a description of the tool, and to the right shows which data needs to be installed. Step 2 In the icon tray towards the top of the screen you'll see a Run button -- a green arrow pointing to the right. It is to the right of the zoon icons. Click on the Run button and the module will process. While running, that button will change to a red stop sign. You'll see small white boxes and % numbers appear on each tool. When the module is complete you'll see a Finished box which shows the processing time. Click OK. Look in the Output window in the lower left of the screen. If any of the lines are red that means there is an error.  You'll also see a red box around any of the tools that have data or licensing issues. The box to the right of each icon will detail what is missing. Follow the steps to resolve the issue, then re-run the module. Also, look at each of the icons. If you see any small lock icons, you will need to install the Alteryx license. Step 3 Click on the Allocate Append tool (second from the last ). Look in the Properties window on the upper left of the screen. Use the drop down at the top to check each installed dataset. As you select them, look in the Pick Variable box and be sure there are no red check boxes...if so, you'll need to install that data license. Once you've confirmed that the module will run with no errors/red boxes, Alteryx is ready to go! If you have any questions or need installation assistance, send an email to fulfillment@alteryx.com and one of our associates will contact you as soon as possible.
