TomTom Geocoder Returns Mixed Census ID

We strive to provide our users with the most recent and accurate data for Drivetimes, Address Points, and Geocoding by providing the most recent TomTom data each quarter. While the updated data is preferred, we have identified that the Census information for this data is partially updated with 2020 Census data and IDs. TomTom has been updating its Census related data to Census 2020 on a county-by-county basis. Since the update isn’t complete for the entire US, the values for the CensusID field reflect a hybrid of 2010 and 2020 for the following datasets:

  • US Geocoder
  • Street Geocoder
  • Address Points
  • Dun & Bradstreet Analytical File (Calgary)
  • Experian ConsumerView

This partial update can make it difficult to join CensusID values from any of these datasets with our Allocate geographies, since Allocate only contains 2010 Census data.

Fortunately, we have a couple of workarounds for our users. Those who want to use the latest datasets but need to join their data with Allocate data can use the Spatial Match Tool to associate data from US Geocoder, Street Geocoder, Address Points, Dun & Bradstreet Analytical File, or ConsumerView with the data from our Allocate Input Tool. This solution will increase the processing time of your Alteryx workflow, since it requires a spatial operation to match the data and Allocate geographies. However, this solution does not require downloading or installing any additional data.

Another option we are providing is the “US_2010CensusID_Geocoder” as a separate install containing the US Geocoder, Address Points, and US Zip9 Coder data from Q1 2021. This installer will provide a modified version of the US Geocoder Macro which only references the Q1 2021 data for geocoding and Address Points. The supplemental US Geocoder will still be in the Address Tools but with the name “US Geocoder (Census 2010)”. The data from Q1 2021 was our latest vintage to only contain Census 2010 data. This installer should be available to those with access to both the US Business and Location Insights packages.

Hopefully, these solutions can keep your workflows running correctly until the full 2020 Census Data is released and available for us to provide!
