Alteryx products release minor version frequently by adopting the patch. In general, more patches are applied, more bugs are fixed.
You can check release note to determine the version you go with.

If you are individual user, you can go with any version. You will get benefit of new features by using the newest version.
When it comes to the version applied in your organization, it's another matter, because you have to take care of compatibility of workflows created by different version of Designer. Especially when you use Alteryx Server, you need more consideration and get mutual agreement among users .
If you strongly want to try newer version(24.2) while maintaining the current installed version(23.2), you can have both 24.2 as non-admin version and 23.2 as Admin version (or 24.2 as Admin version and 23.2 as non-admin version, depending on which version you install now) in your computer. They can co-exist.
