Open first Excel sheet without naming?

I'm trying to open multiple Excel workbooks and extract data from each of them. They all have the same structure and filename, and there is only one worksheet in each file. The problem is that the sheet names differ from one file to the next (depending on the product code that the data relates to).

So... Is there a way to specify the file name in my Input tool, but then tell Alteryx to just open 'the first sheet', whatever its name is?

Sorry if this is a noob question but I couldn't see any way to do it, and wildcards don't seem to work in the sheet name.

What do you want to do with those inputs? Union them together to create on big file? I would take a look at the Wildcard XSLX Input tool in the Crew Macros. You can find them here: https://community.alteryx.com/t5/Engine-Works-Blog/Crew-Macro-Pack-2015-Q3-Release/ba-p/5423

Hi @MarkoRoboto,

Have you tried dynamic input? What you can do is:

1. use directory tool to read a list of your files

2. use dynamic input and select 'list of sheet names' in sheet option, ands your data you will get a column with all sheet names

3. append sheet name at the end of your file name

4. use dynamic input again, passing file name with sheet appended, make sure to 'change entire file path'

as far as I know there is no straightforward option to read 'whatever sheet is there'

Good luck!

Thanks for your help, the directory/dynamic input method looks like the way forward!
