Hi, Maveryxians! Just a reminder to join us for our upcoming in-person DFW Alteryx User Group meeting next Friday, September 29th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at UT Dallas!  We have a great lineup of speakers for this event:

  • UT Dallas students (many who participated in the outstanding Alteryx SparkED program SparkED Analytics Education Program - Alteryx ) will present how they have been using Alteryx for projects and use cases, including a process of utilizing Alteryx to run multiple predictive models, then selecting the right one for further advanced analysis.
  • I will present how to convert a regular Alteryx report into a batch report - all without a batch macro!
  • Capitalize Consulting will present a "how to" session in Alteryx, and we would like to ask you - our user group members - for a vote on which topic you would like to see.  Please cast your vote by replying to this post, and let us know if you prefer:
    • How to build a Macro
    • Overview of Intelligence Suite
    • Predictive Analytics in Alteryx
    • Or, feel free to post your own topic suggestion as a reply!

Please let us know what you think by 5:00 p.m. this coming Tuesday, September 26th.  Special thanks again to Dean Gaurav Shekhar, UT Dallas students Mallikarjuna Swamy and Adyasha Mohapatra, and UTD for generously hosting us on campus.  (I have just visited the Executive Dining Room today, and it is a beautiful venue!)  A map with directions to the room, along with parking locations and a printable parking permit will be posted soon.

Thanks also to Capitalize Cost-Effective Business Intelligence Solutions | Capitalize Care Program (capitalizeconsulting.com) for being one of our guest presenters and bringing their expertise back to the DFW User Group stage!  We look forward to seeing everyone next week at UT Dallas!

I'll vote for Macro building, and I'd especially appreciate if we could spend some time on how to best build/configure a Debug Workflow for macros (especially when nesting macros, if time permits. e.g. An iterative macro wrapped in a batch macro)

I agree with Cleigh.  I vote for Macro building as well.  I would also like to see how to build a Debug Workflow for macros.  Great suggestion!

Hi, Maveryx!  Thank you to all who could join us for the September DFW Alteryx User Group meeting, hosted at UT Dallas!  We had a great round of presentations, with something for just about every level of Alteryx expertise.

Our first guest speaker, Shawn Mock, Senior Manager of Analytics at Capitalize Consulting, delivered an excellent presentation on Macros, as well as the debug workflow included with Alteryx Interface Tools that can be utilized for macro issue solving.  He provided an overview of the three types of macros in Alteryx:  Standard, Batch and Iterative, along with a cool custom nested macro (which is a macro within a macro . . . and on and on if needed).  In Shawn’s nested macro, he showed how the Google API is used to obtain address information for restaurants along a specified drive path.  Shawn has provided a copy of the workflow (without the proprietary API key, of course 😊) to show how the tools would be configured, and please feel free to download the Route App.yxzp in this post and check out the framework.

Eryn McMorrow, Sales Executive, also presented a summary of the many services and capabilities of Capitalize Consulting, which was awarded Alteryx Partner of the Year for 2022 (and previous years for North America).  For more information on Capitalize Consulting, please visit Cost-Effective Business Intelligence Solutions | Capitalize Care Program (capitalizeconsulting.com)

Next, we received a great presentation by Adyasha Mohapatra, UTD student and Alteryx SparkED participant.  Adyasha eloquently spoke about the many ways that Alteryx and the SparkED program have benefited her analytics journey, as well as her career path.  She described how she was ready on the first day of her internship to apply what she has learned in Alteryx and begin analyzing data right away, impressing her team and supervisors.

Following this talk, a team of UTD students featured how they utilized Alteryx and its predictive toolset to import, prep and analyze very large datasets for a major company within a semester project.  Swamy Mallikarjuna, Shukla Shanthakumara, and Manish Ramchandani showed how the Linear Regression tool was applied, and discussed their findings as well as the major positive impact of the results.  Not only did the company want to use the workflow in their production models, but the UTD team also won first place for the student project!

I wrapped up the meeting by presenting a quick showcase of how to convert a regular PDF report in Alteryx to a Batch Report, all without using a Batch Macro.  The original report featured a summary of five locations with customers, all on one map, with a corresponding single summary chart and table.  The batch process then converted the single report to five separate reports, one for each location; each report contained a specific map for the location, with a matching chart and table.  The new process ran with one click of the “Run” button – and no advanced macro building!

The meeting was also live streamed via Zoom and recorded; to access the recording, please visit this link, and audio starts around 3 minutes into the video:

Special thanks to Gaurav Shekhar, Assistant Dean, Graduate Programs, Naveen Jindal School of Management, UTD and UT Dallas for generously hosting our September in-person user group meeting!  It was great to see not only our members there, but also students who had participated in the SparkED program, as well as students new to Alteryx.

Shawn and Eryn, we appreciate your partnership and the very cool workflow; you are always welcome to present at our user group in the future as well!

Thank you also to Adyasha, Swamy, Shukla and Manish for your excellent presentations; it is inspiring to see how Alteryx and the SparkED program is positively influencing your data analytics pathways as students – and in your internships and careers!

In addition, thank you to Swamy Mallikarjuna for organizing the student volunteers; each of the volunteers’ work in hosting the sign-in table was seamless and made the check-in process easy for all!

Manish, I also give you great credit for all of your A/V support; you helped the entire meeting and the process of switching between presenters to flow smoothly and without delays.

For more information on the SparkED program and to apply for an Alteryx license as a student, instructor, or someone transitioning between jobs, please visit SparkED Analytics Education Program - Alteryx

Thank you again to UT Dallas for such a beautiful venue, and to Assistant Dean Shekhar for your ongoing support.  We look forward to more collaborations with you and UTD in the future!
