Alteryx today launched five web-based developer services, known as web APIs or Application Programming Interfaces, through the newly announced Microsoft's Windows Azure Marketplace DataMarket. These mini processing tools from Alteryx are being made available as both premium and "freemium" services through the new Microsoft DataMarket—a brand new data marketplace announced today for cloud-computing developers using the Microsoft Windows Azure application development platform.
While the Alteryx platform has been available and evolving since 1998 through the Software as a Service brand, DemographicsNow, today's announcement is the first instance in which Alteryx is offering free and fee-based access to its workhorse Geographic Business Intelligence technology through a set of web-based APIs (component-sized web application routines) using another cloud-computing provider's environment.
Microsoft's Windows Azure platform is a natural watering hole for innovative Web 2.0 cloud computing efforts. APIs like those we provide can serve up all kinds of data for instant use and integration into any Windows Azure, browser-based application. One service call, for example, calculates consumer expenditures for households in an identified area:
The Consumer Expenditure Data API accesses a large collection of key consumer expenditures on goods and services for geographic or geometric areas around a requested location measured in radial miles or in drive-time minutes. This data includes 220 consumer expenditure variables that collectively cover almost 95% of U.S. household spending on goods and services including, healthcare, clothing, automobiles, electronics, transportation and utilities. Based on extensive modeling of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Consumer Expenditure Survey, this dataset provides reliable estimates of market demand and average household expenditures in any geographic or geometric area of the country.
Another Windows Azure DataMarket provider, Tableau, who offers charting and visualization APIs, demonstrated the ease with which our free Alteryx Consumer Expenditure Data API could be applied in a simple web application that uses their charting API to plot the returned results:
