Alteryx Chairman and CEO Dean Stoecker kicked off the Inspire 2013 Conference this morning with a bang by highlighting three key trends shaping the analytics market …and New York Mets VP, Paul DePodesta, the inspiration for Moneyball, followed by relating the analytics movement in baseball to these trends that are transforming the business world.
Dean Stocker’s keynote was focused on the critical theme of the consumerization Big Data analytics. Dean outlined a transition from the hype of Big Data where volume was paramount, to a reality where true value is delivered to the business by providing the right context and analytics. Key to this transition is enabling data artisans to use both side of their brain, to be creative and analytical, in a single workflow.
Dean first highlighted the importance of Humanizing Big Data – analyzing Big Data in the right context, blending Big Data across data sources including the Teradata Unified Data Architecture, which Dean described, when it is used with Alteryx, as representing the new “stack” for modern data analytics. Transitioning to his next key theme – Liberating Analytics – Dean outlined the need to make analytics as approachable as possible for the business analyst, something that Alteryx has always focused on but over the past year has made into an art form with the addition of the prepackaged predictive tools. Finally, Dean articulated the need for analytics to Drive Business Decisions as part of the business process, rather than be delivered by a separate, disconnected group. Here he highlighted customer Alteryx’s ability to deliver analytics in whichever format that the decision maker wants or needs.

Dean delivered this to a packed house, covering a lot of ground in the mission to consumerize analytics, while at all times celebrating the role of Data Artisans from a variety of organizations including Levis, Southern States Cooperative, Dunkin Brands and The Brand Programming Network
DePodesta, famous for his stint as assistant to A’s General Manager Billy Beane that was chronicled in the book (and later the movie) “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game”, described in detail the transformation baseball has undergone in moving from “gut-driven” decisions to data-driven decisions. He also related this to how businesses make decision and the need to move more toward analytics based decisions.
