“The greatest scientists are artists as well.” —Albert Einstein

What do analysts and journalists have in common?

For starters, you both ask big questions — and relentlessly pursue the answers.

You’re drivers of change, whether solving million-dollar problems in your own organization, writing words that capture the zeitgeist of culture and humanity, or by tackling the most difficult issues in society through the magic of data and the power of words.

You push the boundaries of what’s possible with data science and analytics and your own imagination. Left brain and right brain thinking are not mutually exclusive — you are both analytical and creative.

That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that five-time New York Times best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell will headline Inspire 2019 in Nashville. Gladwell will amplify this sentiment of innovative creativity, having devoted his career to the pursuit of deeper insights and unexpected conclusions.

After all, the best writers use data to tell stories, and the best analysts use stories to bring their data to life.

Your Keynote. Amplified.

Malcolm Gladwell has been a New Yorker staff writer since 1996 (in case you didn’t know, one of the most sought-after and prestigious writing gigs in the world) in addition to being the author of five New York Times bestsellers (yep, this is a big deal too).

Most recently, Gladwell co-founded the podcast company Pushkin Industries and serves as the producer of two incredible podcasts, Revisionist History, which reinterprets the past, and Broken Record, which feeds the musical soul.

We are inspired by his pursuit of topics and research that fascinate him, from psychology to music, and the stories he tells others as a result. It’s not unlike all of you who are actively searching for the story in your data and bringing those insights to life. You are amplifying the story of your data inputs and your career in the process; it’s music to our ears!

We hope that Gladwell’s own path and pursuit of knowledge is as interesting to you as it is to us, because we are thrilled to be his coolest gig yet as he steps into the spotlight as a keynote speaker at Inspire 2019 in Music City.

5 Jams to Amp You Up About Malcolm Gladwell

The best stories start with data, and Gladwell’s books and podcasts are no exception. Amp up your keynote knowledge pre-Inspire — on the plane, train, or automobile — with one of these fascinating reads or listens:

  1. The Tipping Point: How do ideas and behaviors from infectious diseases to social norms reach critical mass? Find out in the bestseller “The Tipping Point,” which covers the “Rule of 150,” the idea that we can only maintain an active social relationship with about 150 people; and Pareto’s principle, or the 80/20 rule that applies to everything from volunteering (20% of the people do 80% of the work) to analytics (Alteryx helps you go from 80% of your time prepping and blending to 80% analyzing).
  2. Blink: When humans make instantaneous decisions, they can appear irrational because they happen so fast. “Blink” explains how our “rash” decisions are informed by past experience and why some of us are better decision-makers than others.
  3. Outliers: Is it true that you need 10,000 hours of practice, or roughly five years of on-the-job experience to be a true expert in your field? Why are the best hockey players born in the first quarter of the year? “Outliers” looks at the metrics of success, and why some of the reasons were hidden right in front of us the whole time.
  4. Broken Record Podcast: If you’re a country music fan headed to Music City to Inspire, be sure to check out Broken Record’s episodes “Nashville Revolution,” featuring three songwriters who helped transform country music in the 1970s, and “Rosanne Cash,” singer/songwriter and daughter of the Man in Black.
  5. David and Goliath: With his latest book, Gladwell examines our understanding of real and perceived advantages and disadvantages, arguing that we have underestimated the value of adversity and over-estimated the value of privilege.

Looking forward to hearing Malcolm speak.  I have read Outliers and The Tipping Point.  They were so good, I might need to read them again.
