Tableau's much-anticipated Hyper technology is now available with their latest release. Hyper is designed to handle large datasets, resulting in faster extract creation and better query performance. As such, it should come as no surprise that the integration of Hyper into Alteryx has also been much-anticipated by our joint customers!

We've received lots of questions and requests around the Alteryx-Hyper integration, so we put together the FAQ below to address them.

How will the new Hyper functionality be integrated into Alteryx?

You will see the integration in two places within Alteryx:

  • The Output Tool. Currently, we offer the ability to create a Tableau Data Extract (.tde) directly from the Output Tool. For Hyper, we will be adding another option to the tool that that will allow Alteryx users to create a Hyper Extract (.hyper) directly from the Output Tool. The Hyper extracts can then be read into any Tableau 10.5+ instance.
  • The Publish to Tableau Server Tool. This tool will be updated to include an option that allows users to specify whether they'd prefer to publish a .tde file or a .hyper file.

Will any Tableau Data Extract (.tde) functionality be deprecated?

No. We understand that many of our users will not switch over to Hyper immediately, so we will be providing both .tde and .hyper as options. Also, the added functionality is fully backwards compatible and will not break or effect any previous workflows built with either the Output Tool or the Publish to Tableau Server Tool.

Will Alteryx be including Hyper read functionality?

No. As is the case with Tableau Data Extracts, Tableau has locked down the ability for third parties to read Hyper Extracts and we are limited by what is built into the Tableau API. If you'd like to see this functionality being offered, we suggest reaching out to Tableau with feedback.

When will the Hyper integration be released in Alteryx?

We are currently planning to release the stated Hyper integrations with our 18.1 release this quarter.

@ARich,

Thanks for the update Alex.  If you have any heads up to provide around the anticipated Q1 date, I'm interested to know as early as possible.  We have to coordinate release (we package the install for the enterprise) to desktops and to our server environment(s).  This also has to be coordinated with Tableau updates to desktop and server.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi @MarqueeCrew,

Update: We're now looking at early March for our Q1 release. Will continue to let you know if anything changes.

Best,

Alex

Hi Alex,

I’m now in the middle of benchmarking the creation and usage of .hyper files, along with some other file formats. If anyone is interested in following along, here is the first article in the series.

  Benchmarking Tableau .hyper files

Thanks,

Thank you very much @ARich. We are planning to upgrade our server in Feb. Can't wait for it.

Will this only be available in Alteryx 11.8?

We are running 11.7

Looks like it's only for Tableau Server and Online since there's no mention of Desktop.

Any chance it works to create hyper files for use with Desktop too?

Update: In another article I saw only Server/Online. @NeilR redirected me to this (which I had seen/read before), which after re-reading I NOW see "any Tableau 10.5+ instance."  :-)

Hi Alex,

Now that 18.1 has launched, it looks like there are quite a few people having issues actually writing to Tableau hyper files. Is this something Alteryx is addressing? Do you have any status update on resolving the issue?

Thank you!

We are testing Tableau 10.5 and Alteryx 2018.1.  What is the solution for updating existing workflows that are outputting TDE files to Hyper?  We want to overwrite existing TDE files, not create a new Hyper file.  What is the solution for workflows outputting TDE files that append to an extract file?  We don't want to create a new Hyper file.

Hi @Pamela,

You should still be able to work with TDEs as before- we just now offer an additional option to write to Hyper. Please reach out to CS if you run into issues.

Our issue is with the output from an Alteryx workflow.  When we change the output format from TDE to Hyper, Alteryx creates a new output file.  We want to overwrite or append data to existing TDE files and convert them to Hyper without creating new output files.

Tableau is currently working on the release of their Hyper API. I am really interested to learn how this will affect the way we work with Alteryx. Some questions: - will we be able to append records to .hyper files? - will InDB tools become compliant with .hyper? - will this functionality be compatible with moving datasets to a Tableau Server environment? Looking forward to learn more about this
